Worcestershire County Cricket Club - Revolutionising Spectator Experience

Worcestershire County Cricket Club is a prominent local cricketing institution based at Worcester’s iconic New Road ground. The club boasts a rich and storied history marked by notable achievements and passionate cricketing traditions. WCCC is an integral part of the county, with the general public and the business community.

The Challenge

During the pandemic, sports stadiums faced significant hurdles in accommodating spectators due to government restrictions. In May 2021, with the limited reopening of sports stadiums, the need arose for spectators to order food, drinks, and retail items directly from their seats via mobile devices. Recognising this challenge, Worcestershire County Cricket Club sought the expertise of Langley Compass Group to develop a user-friendly, quick-ordering solution that could seamlessly integrate with the club’s existing Smart Volution EPOS software and terminals. Key considerations included accessibility for all supporters, fast order processing, and a convenient QR code-based identification system.

The Experience

Langley Compass Group’s software development and project management teams collaborated with Worcestershire County Cricket Club four weeks before the ‘Go Live’ event. In just 28 days, they utilised open-source tools such as JQuery, Javascript, PHP scripting language, and MySQL database to successfully develop a fully integrated ‘Order to Seat’ solution. The final product featured an eCommerce application with bespoke modules that seamlessly integrated with their EPOS system and receipt printers. The solution is accessible via any iOS and Android smartphone device and enables spectators to identify their stand and seat on arrival via a QR code. This integration ensured seamless communication between spectators and the club, streamlining the ordering process.

The Results

On 26th May 2021, Worcestershire County Cricket Club reopened its doors to spectators, armed with the newly implemented ‘Order to Seat’ solution. Throughout the ‘Go Live’ event, Langley Compass Group engineers provided on-site support, ensuring a smooth and glitch-free experience during the opening game.

Spectators could now order food and beverages without leaving their seats, enhancing the match-watching experience and eliminating lengthy queues. The hassle-free ordering process resulted in higher revenue, as spectators could easily place orders without interrupting their enjoyment of the game. Staff productivity and output improved with streamlined order processing and seamless communication between the ordering platform and stadium outlets. The ‘Order to Seat’ solution supported the club’s cashless strategy, promoting safety and convenience for spectators and staff.

The fully integrated solution has continued to serve Worcestershire County Cricket Club effectively, ensuring the safety and satisfaction of its spectators. The success of this collaboration between Langley Compass Group and the cricket club exemplifies the power of technology in revolutionising spectator experiences in the face of unprecedented challenges. As Langley Compass Group’s innovative solutions continue to transform the Hospitality, Retail, and Leisure industries, this partnership is a testament to their commitment to supporting businesses through technology-driven advancements.

“We introduced the new system, and it has been extremely good. Much better stock control, much quicker speed of service, and it’s easy to use, so the staff have also benefitted. The whole experience has been first class.”
